Malawi International Cycle Challenge
As part of its annual fitness programmes and sporting activities, the College of Medicine Sports Complex High Performance Centre (HPC) is proud to announce that it will be hosting the inaugural Malawi International Cycle Challenge on Saturday, 13 June 2020.
The one day road cycle race will start and finish in Blantyre and be contested over a 145 kilometer circuit route in parts of the Thyolo and Mulanje districts, passing through tea plantations, crossing mountainous areas and picking up speed over flat sections of the route.
The challenge is an annual UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) category 1.2 race for elite men from across Africa.
It is the first time that Malawi will be presenting an international cycle race. It has so far attracted interest and enquiries from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania and Lesotho. We expect teams from other countries to also participate.
Our race partners include the Malawi Sports Council, Cycling Federation of Malawi and sports events management company Auhuro (Pty) Ltd (RSA). We are calling on more corporate and individual partners and sponsors to participate in and support this exciting new addition to Malawi’s sports culture.
Part of the proceeds of the race will go towards renovating a maternity wing at the Lisungwi Rural Hospital under the management of the Neno District Health Office in Malawi. The hospital is in dire need of the wing. The current two rooms serve an average 15 patients per week.
